The Price Of Love
She wished he answered her kiss back. She wished he'd stayed home with her so they could spend the whole day in bed. Fendi yan, no!" Sabi niya. "Eh, madam masyadong mahal. "Madam, two gibs 'to ah." "Kasya lip tint diyan, phone, saka wallet. May keychain pa. Kunin mo na?""Sige na nga po. Pabawas na lang sa sweldo ko." Sabi ng dalaga. "Oo, sige ako na bahala diyan." Ani Yuka. It says No Caller ID on her phone screen. She answered the phone."Hello?" There was no response at the other end of the line. "Hello?" She repeated again. There was just silence. But somehow, she knew in her heart who it was. Unshed tears started burning her eyes. She meant every word she was saying to him. She was happy with the man she married. Then she heard a sniffle and the call ended. They were tears for the man she once loved, the man she thought she knew. She was starting to even like Yvo more than she'd intended. As weird as it may sound, she thought she was having a little crush on her husband. What more could she ask for? She married a good man, bonus na lang ang pagiging ubod ng yaman nito at pagiging gwapo. Alam niyang hinding-hindi siya pababayaan nito. She was very confident in that.
Yvo just finished some work in his lab and was heading to his office. He'd promise to leave work early today so he could go shopping with Yuka. He was even the one that texted Yuka to say that he was almost done with his work. Yuka called and told him she'd be on her way to his office. "Hi, Yvo." He looked up from his board to see Krista in front of him. Her smile was still as beautiful as he remembered. "Hey." He was taken aback but quickly recovered. "W-what are you doing here?""I'm working here as an intern." She answered."Why here?" kumunot ang noo niya."Because you're one of the best companies to work for so I thought I'd give it a try." She shrugged.Yvo pushed his glasses in to place and cleares his throat. "I see. Well, I do hope you enjoy your intership here."Tumango si Krista. "Thank you.""I have to go now." He felt electricity when their hands touched. "I really hope we can at least be friends again. Naging magkaibigan naman tayo before we started dating, ibalik natin ang dati."He wet his lips with his tounge and took a slow breath, trying to calm his pounding heart. She still had the same effect on him and he hated it. He had to remind himself that he was married now and his wife was pregnant. No matter how much he wanted, he could never get back with her."I need to get going, Krista." he gently said as he slid his hands away from her hold.
"I think I saw your wife earlier. She's beautiful."
"Thank you." he said in a quiet tone. Yuka was probably in his office right now, she said he would wait for him there.
Ngumiti muli si Krista bago tumalikod at naglakad palayo. He was left standing there with conflicted feelings for her. He wanted to forget any feelings he had left for her.
He rushed to his office and sure enough, Yuka was sitting at his desk, fiddling with his computer.
"Doc." She gave her a cheeky smile that always makes her eyes disappear. He felt warmth in her presence. There was just something about her that was attractive and familiar.
Krista makes his heart pound but with Yuka, he felt comfortable. She was like a deep sigh after an exhausting day which was what he really needed right now.
She got up from his swivel chair and walked to him to give him a hug. He found himself hugging her back.
"Kanina pa kita hinihintay." She pouted cutely when she pulled away from the hug. Then rubbed her protruding stomach. "Gutom na si baby."
"I'm sorry. I didn't know you were already here." He apologized before his eyes went to her stomach. Hinawakan niya ang tiyan nito. "What does the baby want?"
"Gusto ko ng burger sa Shake Shack, kanina pa ako natatakam dun." she smiled again, wiggling her brows up and down.
"Okay, Shake Shack it is." He smiled back.
"Kumusta naman ang araw mo? Napagod ka ngayon?" Yuka combed her fingers through his hair.
He wanted to say something about Krista to her pero parang umurong ang dila niya. He didn't want to give Yuka something to think about as he knew how she reacted when he went out with Krista.
"Hindi naman. Everything's good with work." He answered.
Yuka had always been a woman of expression. You'd see in her face when something's bothering her.
"Something wrong?" Yvo's brows furrowed at the sudden change in her face. Had she seen Krista, too? Did she recognize her?
"Tumawag si Tate kanina." she quietly said.
Umarko ang kilay ni Yvo. He felt a pull in his chest at the mention of his friend's name. He hadn't spoken to Tate since the argument and now he was calling his wife. What did he want from his wife? Did he want her back? Yuka had always been in love with Tate, did she want to take him back?
"And?" he asked, trying to sound matter of factly.
"Hindi naman siya nagsalita." Yuka shrugged. "But I know it was him.
He looked at her face and could only see sincerity. There were no regrets, no wishing it was Tate she was with instead of him. She said it so surely and sincerely. Her eyes were shining with admiration as he looked at her.
"I hope you know I mean it, Yvo." she said.
"I do." he answered back.
She smiled again and held his face in her hands, tiptoeing to give him a peck on the lips. They were warm and soft against him.
"Yvo..." she whispered while their lips were still against each other's, eyes closed.
"Hmm?"
"I think I'm starting to like you."
