Chapter 5
Levi Many years ago. "Good morning, class," Mrs. Rogers said in her cheerful voice as the students settled in for the day. "We have a new student joining our class. Everyone, say hello to Evelyn.""Hi, Evelyn," the class said in unison.Levi adjusted his glasses from the front row and looked at the new girl. Her uniform was already wrinkled, unlike the other girls in the class. One of her socks was rolled up and the other was rolled down. Her dark blonde hair was braided back, but strands of it began to hang out around her face.Messy, Levi thought to himself as he straightened up his pencil case on his desk. He prided himself on being organized and precise, always making sure everything was in its proper place."Only my grandmother calls me Evelyn," the girl announced in a clear loud voice. Levi looked up at her once more, surprised by the confidence in her voice. "You all can call me Evie. My parents named me after Evelyn O'Connell.""Who's Evelyn O'Connell?" Sara Murphy, the prettiest girl in third grade and the second smartest student in class, asked."She's a fictional character from a 1999 movie called The Mummy," Levi remarked, his tone conveying his usual matter-of-fact attitude. Levi was used to being the smartest kid in class and enjoyed sharing his knowledge."Yes," Evie said, looking at Levi with a big smile on her face."So you're named after a mummy?" Jack Bosco laughed from the back of the classroom."No," Levi and Evie said together."Evelyn was a librarian," Evie corrected the boy, her tone firm."Her husband was an archaeologist," Levi added, eager to showcase his knowledge."Actually, he was a French foreign legion, MI6 agent, Medjai, desert guide, and adventurer," Evie corrected him. "Which I intend to become.""Yes, but his main occupatio—""Alright, you two," Mrs. Rogers laughed. "Evie, why don't you sit next to Levi? I have a feeling you two will have a lot to talk about.""Sure," Evie swung her backpack over her shoulder and walked over to the empty seat.Levi watched her approach him. The big smile on her lips widened as she took a seat and waved to him. Levi waved back, slightly apprehensive about the new girl. He did not like being corrected. Unless Levi was certain about something, he did not speak on the matter. For Evie to correct him about Rick O'Connell was unsettling. "It's Friday, so you know what that means," Mrs. Rogers clapped her hands together. "Get out your pencils." Evie leaned over and poked Levi's arm, "Psss...."Levi looked over at her and then down at the pencil mark she had just left on his crisp white uniform shirt. "What's your name?" Evie asked. "Levi." Evie's eyes lit up, "We have the same letters in our name." "Levi, Evie," Mrs. Rogers cleared her throat. Levi looked away and folded his hands on the table. "Psss," Evie leaned over once more. "Levi." "What?" Levi looked over. "Do you have an eraser I could borrow?" "No." Levi lied. "Darn," Evie tapped her pencil on the edge of her table. "Quiet, please," the teacher looked toward the pair once more. "The quiz is about to begin." Letting out a frustrated sigh, Levi turned away. He ignored the girl beside him as his teacher passed out the weekly math challenge and started the timer. Levi had practiced all week with his dad. Since September, no one had topped his score as the math champion of class 305. Not even Sara Murphy with her private tutors and laminated flashcards could do math as quickly as Levi. But after lunch, all of Levi's hard work came crashing down when Mrs. Rogers announced Evie as the new math champion. "What?" Levi's eyes widened in shock as his teacher revealed Evie's name on the starboard. "What was her score?""I can't not share th-" Mrs. Rogers began when Evie suddenly jumped up from her seat. "100!" Levi stared, completely flabbergasted. 100? He's eyes narrowed. 100? "It was a very close call," Mrs. Rogers announced. Close call, my butt, Levi looked down at his paper and the big fat ninety-five. For the rest of the day, Levi ignored Evie, no matter how many times she leaned over and poked his arm. By the end of the school day, he was certain Dana, their housekeeper, would never be able to get the stupid pencil stains off his shirt. And it was his favorite shirt. "Hey, handsome," Daisy held out her arms as Levi stomped over to her after dismissal. Upon seeing his face, Daisy raised her sunglasses. "What's the matter?""Nothing," Levi muttered. "I want to go home. I have lots of homework.""Levi!" a voice shouted from across the schoolyard."Oh no," Levi groaned as he recognized Evie's voice."Levi!" Evie called again, running toward them."Mom, get in the car," Levi grabbed Daisy's hand, trying to hurry her along."Hey, Levi!" Evie shouted as she approached."Mom, move!" Levi urged, his face flushing with embarrassment."Baby, what's the matter?" Daisy asked, concerned, as the little girl stopped in front of them, hunched over to catch her breath."Do you want to come over for a play date?" Evie asked, her eyes bright with excitement."No," Levi replied bluntly. "I have homework.""We can do it together before we pla—""I need to get to bed early," Levi interrupted."Levi," Daisy frowned, noticing how Evie's smile faltered. "That's not very nice.""That's okay," Evie shrugged, her smile returning. "Do you want to come over this weekend?"Before Levi could turn down the offer, Daisy stepped in. "We would love to come over," she said."Mom," Levi protested, shaking his head."Are you new to our school?" Daisy asked, ignoring her son's objections."Yes, it's my first day today," Evie announced proudly. "My name is Evie.""Nice to meet you, Evie," Daisy said, shaking her hand. "I'm Daisy.""Do you want to meet my mom?" Evie asked eagerly."Sure," Daisy nodded."Mom, please," Levi's frown deepened. "Can we please go home?""Just a sec, baby," Daisy said as Evie's mother walked toward them."Hi," the woman, a near replica of Evie, smiled warmly. "I'm Debbi.""Daisy," Daisy held out her hand. "Welcome to the neighborhood.""Thank you," Debbi's smile widened, clearly grateful for Daisy's warmth. "Evie cannot stop talking about Levi. The first thing she asked me today was to come introduce myself to you so she could ask if Levi could come over to play.""Oh, we would love to, sweetheart," Daisy smiled at Evie. "But unfortunately, I have to take the kids to their Zia for dinner tonight. But how about this weekend? It's going to be very hot, we can go to the park.""Can we, Mom?" Evie looked at Debbi with hopeful eyes."Of course," Debbi nodded, her smile broadening.Levi crossed his arms over his chest and swallowed a groan. He glared at his mother the whole ride home. How dare she volunteer him to play with that girl? "Maybe I can send Mason in my place," Levi suggested Saturday morning at breakfast. "No way," Mason protested. "Maybe she will be more interested in playing with Lily," Levi tried. "Can we take Lily with us?" "Why are you so against Evelyn Summers?" Luca asked, tilting his head and looking at his son. "Your mom told me she seems very sweet and I actually met her father the other day at golf. They invited us for dinner." "Wonderful," Levi frowned. "What's next? Mason's going to marry her?" "Is she pretty?" Mason questioned, picking up his pancake. "I don't know," Levi shrugged. "But she's very messy. You two can roll around in mud all day." "She wants to be your friend, Levi," Daisy sighed. "Poor thing is new to your school and she really wants a friend. They've moved around many times in the past few years and her mother said Evie has been very lonely." "Tell her to get a dog," Levi replied. "I want a dog," Lily looked to her father from his lap. "Not yet," Luca said, kissing the tip of her nose. "Levi," Daisy reached across the table and held her son's hand. "Sweetheart. If you go to the park today with Evie, I promise to take you to the Natural History Museum tomorrow and we can stay for as long as you like." "Can I stay home?" Mason asked. "Yes, please," Levi looked at his twin with disgust. "Let's keep this one at home." "Fine," Daisy agreed. "But do we have a deal?" "Fine," Levi rolled his eyes. "I'll go to the park with Evelyn." _______________ Theo I'm five minutes away, Theo typed and hit send on his phone's screen. I hope you're ready. I don't like to be late. His phone buzzed almost immediately with a replyOh, the dinner is tonight? Daphne wrote. I completely forgot. Theo's eyes narrowed, his jaw clenching. He called her number, holding the phone to his ear as it rang."Hello?" Daphne answered."What the hell?" Theo's tone was hard. "Brad contacted you forty-eight hours ago, just like your contract stated. The dinner is in an hour.""My god," Daphne paused, a teasing lilt in her voice. "It was just a joke. I didn't forget."Theo's mood darkened further. "That wasn't a very funny joke.""Do you even know what a funny joke is?" Daphne asked, amusement clear in her tone.Theo rolled his eyes, composing himself. "I'm downstairs.""I can see that," Daphne said. "Are you not going to get out of the car?"Lowering his phone, Theo looked toward the luxury apartment complex. His chauffeur opened the car door just as the doorman opened the glass doors for Daphne. For late September, the night was warm. A light breeze blew down the street, pushing Daphne's soft, feathery hair onto her face. She quickly caught the dark strands and tucked them behind her ear. The delicate fabric of her crimson red dress fluttered in the wind, revealing the slit and her perfectly toned long leg. Theo's eyes traveled up her figure as she walked down the steps and came to stand before him. Catching his gaze, she smiled, knowing the effect she had on men."Good evening, my love," she cooed, her lashes fluttering to show off her big doe eyes. "Ready for our first date?""That's not the dress I sent," Theo remarked, his face pulling into a frown."I know," Daphne moved her hair over her shoulder, drawing his gaze to the sweetheart neckline of the dress and the thin layer of lace peeking out from under the bodice. "This one is more flattering.""It's also very eye-catching," Theo complained."So you agree?" Daphne smiled. "That this dress is more flattering?""Go change.""No.""Daphne.""Mrs. Hendrick is not only your client's wife but also a professor at The Fashion Institute. She will appreciate this stunning dress. Trust me, she's probably bored of the black dresses everyone's wearing this season in New York.""How do you know this?" Theo asked, curiosity piqued."Don't you do your research before a business meeting?" Daphne countered."I'm not trying to impress Mrs. Hendrick," Theo declared. "I need her husband.""Sometimes, if you want the husband," Daphne said, stepping forward and adjusting Theo's bowtie, "you need the wife on your team."Theo looked down at her hands, catching the intoxicating scent of her perfume. Her proximity made the fragrance even more intense."Trust me on this," Daphne said softly."And why should I?" Theo arched an eyebrow."Because if you make less money, I get paid less money," Daphne lowered her hand. "And I'm not about to let that happen."Theo's irritation slowly gave way to amusement as he watched Daphne's confident smile. He couldn't help but chuckle, shaking his head slightly. "Get in the car," he said, holding the door open for her.Daphne flashed him a smile before gracefully sliding into the back seat. Theo walked around and slipped into the seat beside her, closing the door behind him. As the car pulled away from the curb, he glanced over at her. "You really know how to test my patience," Theo said. "Only because I know you can handle it," Daphne replied with a smirk, adjusting her dress. The ride to the gala was filled with a comfortable silence, punctuated only by the soft hum of the city outside. When they arrived, the scene was breathtaking. The gala was held at one of New York City's most lavish venues—a grand ballroom with sparkling chandeliers, marble floors, and walls adorned with opulent tapestries. The moment they stepped out of the car, all eyes turned toward them. The whispers started almost immediately."Is that Theo Silvano?""And who's that with him?"Theo offered his arm to Daphne, and she took it with a graceful nod. As they walked up the steps to the entrance, the flash of cameras captured their every move. Inside, the ballroom was even more magnificent. Tables draped in white linens were set with fine china and crystal glasses. Waiters in crisp uniforms moved through the crowd, offering champagne and hors d'oeuvres."Quite the turnout," Theo remarked, scanning the room."All the better to make an impression," Daphne said, her eyes sparkling with excitement. As they mingled, the whispers followed them. People couldn't help but admire Daphne's striking red dress and Theo's sharp tuxedo. They were the perfect picture of elegance and sophistication."Theo, it's a pleasure to see you," an older gentleman greeted them, shaking Theo's hand."The pleasure is mine, Mr. Goldstern," Theo replied smoothly. "This is Daphne Dashwood, my girlfriend." "Enchanté," Daphne said ina light French accent, extending her hand."Enchanté, indeed," Mr. Goldstern responded, kissing the back of her hand. "You've certainly brightened up the evening."Theo watched the interaction with amusement. Daphne's charm was undeniable, and it was clear she had captured the attention of everyone in the room."Come," Mr. Goldstern motioned for Theo and Daphne to follow him into the room. "After you," Theo placed his hand on Daphne's back. "Thank you," Daphne smiled, the light beaming from her face as she looked toward him with warmth. "Forgive me, Theo," Mr. Goldstern chuckled. "I had no idea you were seeing someone. I had assumed ...... ah, never mind." Daphne looked back at Theo curiously, trying to catch his eyes, but he stared straight ahead, his face a mask of composure. He knew exactly what Goldstein was referring to. No one in New York had seen him with someone since Ava had humiliated him by leaving him for John. The memories of how publicly she had flaunted her new relationship, the whispers and stares that followed him everywhere, were still fresh wounds. He glanced around, seeing the hungry eyes on him and Daphne. They were the same eyes that had watched the downfall of his relationship, relished in the scandal, and dissected every detail of the breakup. The anger simmered beneath his calm exterior, a fire that fueled his determination to never be humiliated like that again. As Theo scanned the room once again, his gaze locked onto a pair of familiar eyes. Ava. She stood near the bar, her features illuminated by the soft, ambient lighting. Her eyes widened slightly in surprise, then quickly narrowed, a flicker of emotion crossing her face— annoyance, Theo recognized immediately, at seeing him with someone new. Theo's grip on Daphne's back tightened ever so slightly, his anger re-ignited by the sight of Ava. The memories of her deception and the humiliation he had endured because of her flooded his mind. How she had flaunted her affair with John, parading him around as if Theo's feelings were insignificant."Are you alright?" Daphne's voice was soft as she looked up at him.Theo forced a smile, pushing the bitterness aside. "I'm fine," he said, his voice steady. Daphne followed his gaze to the bar. She caught sight of Ava as the girl stared at Theo. "This way," Theo turned Daphne away, steering to follow Goldstern. As they made their way further into the room, Mr. Goldstern led the pair to a group of gentlemen engaged in animated conversation. One of them, a tall man with silver hair and a commanding presence, caught sight of them and smiled warmly."Theo, Daphne, allow me to introduce Mr. Hendricks," Mr. Goldstern said, gesturing to the silver-haired man. "He's the CEO of Global Dynamics." "Mr. Hendricks, it's an honor to meet you," Theo said, shaking his hand firmly."The honor is mine, Mr. Silvano," Mr. Hendricks replied, his eyes sparkling with genuine interest. "I've heard great things about you."Daphne stepped forward gracefully, her hand extended. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Hendricks," she said, her voice warm and engaging."The pleasure is all mine, Ms. Dashwood," Mr. Hendricks responded, taking her hand and giving it a courteous shake. "You've certainly added a touch of elegance to our gathering."Daphne's laughter was light and infectious. "Thank you, Mr. Hendricks. I'm just here to support Theo and meet all the wonderful people he speaks so highly of."Theo watched, astonished at how effortlessly Daphne fit into the role of the perfect supporting girlfriend. She engaged each of the men with charm and wit, listened attentively, asked insightful questions, and responded with just the right amount of enthusiasm."Mr. Clark, I understand you recently led a successful merger with TechCorp," Daphne said, her eyes bright with interest as she turned toward one of the other men in the group. "That must have been quite the challenge."Mr. Clark beamed at the recognition. "Indeed, it was Ms. Dashwood. But with a great team and strategic planning, we managed to pull it off.""And Mr. Madison," Daphne continued, turning her attention smoothly to the next gentleman, "Theo has told me about your groundbreaking work in renewable energy. It's truly inspiring."Mr. Madison looked genuinely pleased. "Thank you, Ms. Dashwood. It's a field I'm passionate about, and we're making significant strides."Theo couldn't help but stare at Daphne. She wasn't just playing a part; she was excelling at it. "Theo, your recent acquisition of your own tech startup has everyone talking," Mr. Hendrick remarked. "It's quite the bold move."Theo nodded. "It's all about staying ahead of the curve, Mr. Hendrick. The tech industry is constantly evolving, and we need to be at the forefront of innovation.""I couldn't agree more," Daphne interjected, drawing the attention of the group. "The integration of artificial intelligence in consumer products is the next big leap. Companies that can harness AI effectively will dominate the market in the coming years."Mr. Hendrick raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. "You seem to know quite a bit about the tech industry, Miss Dashwood. What are your thoughts on the current state of AI development?"Daphne smiled confidently. "AI is still in its infancy, but its potential is limitless. The key is to focus on ethical AI—ensuring that these technologies are developed responsibly and used for the betterment of society. For instance, advancements in AI can revolutionize healthcare, providing personalized treatment plans and improving patient outcomes."Mr. Madison nodded appreciatively. "That's a very insightful perspective, Miss Daphne. Are you involved in the tech sector?"Daphne shook her head. "Not directly, but I've always had a keen interest in technology and its implications. I've studied the trends and followed the developments closely. It's a fascinating field with so much potential."Theo watched Daphne hold her own in the conversation. The way her eyes sparkled and the way she spoke left him wanting to hear more. Her knowledge and confidence were clearly impressing the seasoned businessmen.... And him. "What about quantum computing?" Mr. Hendrick asked, leaning in slightly. "Do you see that playing a significant role in the future?""Absolutely," Daphne replied without hesitation. "Quantum computing has the potential to solve problems that are currently unsolvable with classical computers. It could revolutionize industries from pharmaceuticals to cybersecurity. The challenge lies in making it practical and scalable, but the progress we're seeing is promising."Mr. Madison exchanged a glance with Mr. Hendrick, both clearly impressed. "You're quite the expert, Miss Daphne. It's refreshing to hear such informed opinions."Daphne shrugged modestly. "I believe in staying informed about the world around us. Knowledge is power, after all."Theo couldn't help but smile. "That's one of the many things I admire about Daphne. She's always ahead of the curve."The men laughed appreciatively, clearly enjoying the banter. "Well, Mr. Silvano, it seems you've found a remarkable young woman," Mr. Hendrick said, raising his glass in a toast. "To innovation and success.""To innovation and success," the group echoed, clinking their glasses together.Theo and Daphne raised their glasses before gracefully excused themselves and walked away from the group. The ambient hum of the lavish gala filled the air, with the soft clinking of glasses and the murmur of elegant conversation surrounding them."You had them eating out of the palm of your hand," Theo said, handing Daphne a new drink. Daphne chuckled softly, her eyes sparkling under the chandeliers. "Well, it helps when you actually know what you're talking about. But thank you. It was fun to see their reactions."Theo glanced at her, his amusement evident. "You were right about appearance and expertise going hand and hand." "Glad you noticed," she replied with a smirk. "Now, where's our next target?"Before Theo could respond, Ava appeared with a polite smile on her face. She was dressed in a sleek, black evening gown. Theo quickly looked around and noted twenty other girls wearing the same color. "Theo, it's been a while," Ava said smoothly, her eyes flicking from Theo to Daphne. "Aren't you going to introduce me to your lovely companion?"Theo's jaw tightened slightly, but he maintained his composure. "Daphne, this is Ava. Ava, this is Daphne, my girlfrioend." Ava's eyes widened slightly. She had not been expecting that. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Daphne," she said, turning her attention back to the girl in red. Daphne took Ava's hand, her expression unreadable but her grip firm. "Likewise."Ava's smile faltered for a brief moment before she recovered. "Theo and I have a lot of history together. I'm glad to see he's found someone who can keep up with him."Daphne's eyes flashed with a hint of challenge. "I do my best. And it seems you've been doing well yourself.""Oh, I manage," Ava replied her tone light but with an undercurrent of competitiveness. "I'm sure we'll be seeing more of each other.""I look forward to it," Daphne said smoothly, her gaze never wavering from Ava's.Theo, sensing the tension, interjected. "Ava, it was nice seeing you. Daphne and I have some people we need to speak with.""Of course," Ava said, her smile never reaching her eyes. "Enjoy the rest of your evening."As Ava walked away, Theo spotted John lurking back, too much of a coward to come forward and show his face. When their eyes met, he flashed Theo a tight lip apologetic smile. "Fuckin' idiot," Theo muttered under his breath. Beside him, Daphne watched Ava's retreating figure with a calm demeanor. "She seems...interesting.""That's one way to put it," Theo muttered, shaking his head slightly. "Who is she?" "My ex," Theo replied. "Oh," Daphne said, processing the information. She glanced back at Ava before focusing on Theo again. "How long were you together?""None of your concern," Theo said."Nasty breakup?" "Leave it alone, Ms. Dashwood." "She wanted marriage and kids?" "Why did your mind go there?" "That's what every girl like Ava wants," Daphne said. "They're prep-school princess who grow up to marry someone richer than their dads and make beautiful babies with their husbands for their nannies to take care of while they vacation in the South of France." "Prep-school princess?" Theo raised a brow. "It's a term," Daphne explained. "Like trust fund baddie, Asian baby girls, Nepo babies." "What are you?" Theo asked, intrigued by the terms. Daphne sighed, "I'm still working on a term for myself. It's so hard being the original." "How about gold digger?" Theo suggested with a teasing smile.Daphne gasped dramatically. "That is a derogatory term, and I am highly offended.""So you wouldn't marry for money?" Theo pressed."Yes—" Daphne began.Theo grinned. "See.""But!" Daphne held up her hand, stopping him. "A traditional gold digger marries for money and takes your money. I am not like that. I will help you grow your money.""Very progressive," Theo said, taking a small sip of his drink."You should be too," Daphne retorted. "It's very ignorant and sexist of you to call me a gold digger when you know very well you would have called me ambitious if I were a man."Theo laughed, appreciating her sharp wit. "Touché. So what would you call yourself?""A visionary," Daphne replied confidently. "I'm not just after wealth; I'm after building something great with it."Theo nodded, impressed. "I like that. A visionary. It suits you.""Good," Daphne smiled. "Because I'm not settling for anything less." __________________________ Levi Many years ago. Much to Levi's disappointment, Daisy and Debbi did not hate one another. They became close friends and poor Levi was left to endure Evelyn's presence everywhere. Just when he thought she couldn't get any worse, Evie proved him wrong. It was early February and the whole school was decorated red and pink for the Girl's Choice Valentine's Day Dance. As a seventh grader, it would be Levi's first time attending the dance. He was sure Lisa Collins was going to ask him. Mason had heard the girl giggling about it in gym and Levi knew Lisa had a crush on him ever since they were paired up to be science partners in the beginning of the year. Everything was looking great. Lisa was a beautiful girl and she always smelled like cupcakes. Levi was certain her lip gloss tasted like cupcakes as well. Since Daisy and Debbi had volunteered to set up the dance, Levi and Evie were roped into staying afterschool as well. Evie wanted to decorate the photo booth and Levi left her to it. He found Lisa leaving the girl's locker room after cheerleading practice and stopped her to ask about the science homework. It was just an excuse to get the girl to talk to him alone. Of course, Levi knew the homework. "Hey, Lisa," Levi said, trying to sound casual. "Do you remember what we're supposed to do for the science project?"Lisa smiled, her eyes lighting up. "Of course. We just need to finish our presentations. I can't wait to see what you've prepared."Levi grinned, feeling his heart race. "Yeah, me too. Maybe we could work on it together sometime?"Just as Lisa opened her mouth to reply, a loud voice interrupted them."Levi!" Evie called out, bounding over with her usual enthusiasm. No, Levi wanted to hide. "Levi," Evie called again. "Can I talk to you for a sec?"Levi's heart sank. "What is it?""Hi, Lisa!" Evie waved cheerfully before turning her attention back to Levi. "So, at first I thought this whole dance was stupid and I already made plans with my dad to go to the movies but then your mom told me no one asked you to the dance yet and that made me so sad. I know you wanted to go because I heard you talking to Mason about the DJ and it's so stupid that no one has asked you to the dance yet because you're so amazing and well, I was wondering if you would go to the dance with me?"Levi's eyes widened, and he felt a mix of shock and frustration. This was not part of the plan. He glanced at Lisa, whose smile had faltered slightly."Um, well, I—" Levi stammered, trying to think of what to say. He did not want to be rude to Evie in front of Lisa. Lisa cleared her throat and offered a polite smile. "I think I'll head out now. See you around, Levi."Levi watched in dismay as Lisa walked away, her earlier excitement clearly deflated. Turning back to Evie, he couldn't hide his irritation."You just ruined everything," he snapped, his frustration boiling over. "I was about to get asked to the dance by Lisa. Why did you have to come over and mess it all up?"Evie's smile faded, her eyes widening in surprise. "I didn't know. I just thought—""You thought wrong," Levi interrupted, his tone harsh. "Just leave me alone."Without waiting around, Levi grabbed his backpack off the floor and rushed out of the school building. Later that day, as they were setting up for dinner, Daisy noticed Levi's foul mood. She approached him, wiping her hands on a cloth. "What's going on? You've been grumpy all afternoon."Levi sighed, dropping the napkin he was holding. "Evelyn ruined everything. Lisa was about to ask me to the dance, and then she showed up and asked me instead.""How was she supposed to know what?" Daisy frowned. "I'm sure Evie was just trying to be nice. She didn't mean any harm.""But she ruined my plan," Levi grumbled."Levi," Daisy said softly, "It took a lot of courage for her to ask you to the dance. She thinks very highly of you. You should accept her invitation and make the best of it. Who knows? You might have a good time.""I'm not interested in going," Levi muttered. "No, baby," Daisy shook her head. "Go. You'll have fun. I promise." Levi mulled over his mother's words but couldn't shake his reluctance. Later that evening, as he sat in his room brooding, he suddenly had an idea. "Mason!" Levi called out, stepping into his twin's room. Mason looked up from his game, raising an eyebrow."What's up?" Mason asked."Can you pretend to be me and take Evelyn to the dance tomorrow?" Levi asked a hint of desperation in his voice.Mason smirked. "Why would I do that? She asked you, not me.""Come on, Mason. Just this once," Levi pleaded. "I'll take your math test for you." Mason's hands paused on his controllers. For Levi to offer such a deal meant the man was desperate. Mason thought for a moment before nodding. "Alright, deal.""Thank," Levi said, feeling a sense of relief wash over him.The next day, as the dance approached, Mason got ready in Levi's clothes. They shared the same looks, and if Mason kept a low profile, no one would notice the switch. Levi felt confident his plan would work. However, when Mason showed up at the dance, Evie spotted him immediately. She walked up to him, a confused look on her face."Levi?" Evie asked, tilting her head.Mason smiled nervously. "Uh, yeah. Hi, Evie."Evie narrowed her eyes, studying him closely. "You're not Levi, are you? You're Mason."Mason's smile faltered. "Uh, how did you know?"Evie rolled her eyes. "Who's brilliant idea was this?" Mason sighed. "Levi didn't want to come, so he sent me instead."Evie's face fell, a mix of disappointment and hurt flashing across her eyes. "Why didn't he just tell me?""I'm sorry, Evie," Mason said. "He thought it would be less awkward this way.""Well, it isn't," Evie said firmly."Sorry," Mason shrugged. "But please don't tell our mom or dad. Levi will be in a shit load of trouble." "Fine," Evie said before walking away. ____________________ Theo As the evening progressed, Theo and Daphne found themselves at the center of attention, effortlessly mingling with the crowd. Daphne's charm and intelligence drew people in, while Theo's commanding presence ensured they were both remembered. They shared laughter with influential business figures, and Daphne's quick wit impressed everyone she met. After some time, while the guest began to slowly leave for the night, Daphne excused herself to use the restroom. As she entered the lavishly decorated ladies' room, the sounds of the gala faded, replaced by the quiet elegance of marble and gold fixtures. Daphne took a moment to touch up her makeup, savoring the brief respite, before quickly stepping into one of the stalls. Just as she entered, she heard familiar voices make their way into the bathroom. "I can't believe Theo brought that girl here," Ava's voice was unmistakable, dripping with disdain."Who does she think she is?" another voice chimed in. "She's clearly out of her depth.""I bet she's just using him for his money," Ava sneered. "It's so obvious. A gold digger, plain and simple.""She certainly has the act down," a third voice added. "But she'll never fit in with our crowd."Daphne's heart pounded in her chest. She clenched her fists, forcing herself to remain silent."She's not even that pretty," Ava continued. "Just wait. Theo will see through her eventually.""As if she could replace you," the third voice laughed again. "He'll be spending the rest of his life looking for someone like me," Ava said. "I was the best thing that ever happened to him. His tram he has with him tonight won't last a week with him." Daphne took a deep breath, forcing herself to remain composed. Her mind slowly drifted back to her school days, filled with girls just like Ava. They mocked her for not having the latest designer clothes, for not vacationing in the Hamptons or the South of France. She remembered the whispers behind her back, the exclusion from social circles, and the sense of not belonging. She had worked so hard to overcome those feelings, to build herself up and prove her worth. And now, here she was, facing the same type of judgment from the same type of people who would be nothing without their money. Anger surged through Daphne, but she fought to keep it in check. She straightened her shoulders, forcing herself to listen. Every word the girls' spoke dug deep into her skin. It took everything in Daphne's power to not walk out and dunk their heads in the toilet. After several minutes, as they began to leave, Daphne watched Ava through the slither of space between the stall doors. "Don't worry about her," Ava's friend said. "You are so much prettier than her. And you have John." Ava smirked, adjusting her dress in the mirror. "I know it's killing him to see me with someone else. I know he will be crawling back to me. Begging me to take him back." Daphne waited until the last echo of their heels faded away before stepping out of the stall. She stared at her reflection in the mirror, trying to steady her breathing. As the initial wave of anger began to subside, a realization hit her: Ava was jealous. Not just casually envious, but truly threatened by Daphne's presence. It all began to make sense. Theo had hired her to make Ava jealous. That's why he was so particular about her appearance, her manners, and her interactions with others. She wasn't just a date; she was a strategic move in his ongoing game with Ava.Daphne felt a mix of emotions— anger, irritation, but also a strange sense of satisfaction. If Ava was feeling threatened, it meant she was doing her job well. Determined to keep her composure, Daphne fixed her makeup and smoothed down her dress. When she returned to the gala, Theo was waiting for her, a concerned look on his face. "Are you okay?" he asked, noticing Ava and her friends eyeing them from across the room. Daphne smiled, slipping her arm through his. "I'm fine.""I think we should make our exit," Theo announced, checking his watch. "I have an early morning tomor-" Pausing and making sure Ava and her friends could see, Daphne turned toward Theo. She stepped closer and touched the edge of his face with a sweet smile on her lips. "What are you doing?" Theo asked. Daphne met his gaze, "Isn't this what you wanted?" Theo blinked. "What?""Don't play dumb, Theo," Daphne continued, shaking her head to make it look as if they were lost in their own bubble. "You hired me to make Ava jealous, didn't you?"Theo's expression shifted, "How did you figure it out?" Daphne's smile faded, replaced by a more serious look. "You didn't think I'd catch on? Ava was practically seething with jealousy. She might as well have been wearing a neon sign.""Good," Theo smirked, the satisfaction evident in his eyes."You're sick," Daphne shook her head. "I did not sign up for this. And I want no part in this." "Suddenly, now you have morals?" Theo questioned. "You're getting paid to do a job, Ms. Dashwood. What does it matter who you're making jealous?" "Using someone to hurt another isn't the way to heal," Daphne said firmly. "You need to deal with your past on your own terms, without dragging me into it.""I'm willing to renegotiate your contract," Theo announced. "Seeing how well you executed your job." "No," Daphne said. "Think about it.""Mmmmm," Daphne tapped her feet for a few seconds. "I did. And the answer is still no." "Daphne-" "I would like to go home now," Daphne took in a deep breath and let it out. "It was nice working with you, Mr. Silvano." "We'll talk about this tomorrow."Theo said to which Daphne snorted. He passed her a hard glare before turning to find the host. Daphne turned away and pulled out her cell phone, wondering if she should call a cab home. Just as she turned toward the exit, Ava intercepted her with a confident stride. Her two friends trailed along behind her like a scene from a bad movie. Daphne fought the urge to roll her eyes. "A lover's quarrel?" Ava's voice carried a tone of polite curiosity, though underlying it was an unmistakable hint of condescension.Daphne stopped in her tracks, turning to face Ava with a composed expression. "Oh, that? It's nothing." "I see." "It was nice meeting you all tonight," Daphne wanted to keep it light and short. "If you'll excuse me-" "I just wanted to say it was..." Ava's smile widened slightly, tinged with an edge of superiority. "Interesting seeing you here tonight."Daphne raised an eyebrow, maintaining her cool demeanor. "Likewise, Ava."Ava leaned in slightly, her voice lowering as if sharing a confidential remark. "You know, Theo has a tendency to like things a certain way."Daphne kept her composure, a faint smile playing on her lips. "Oh, really?""Well, just a word of advice," Ava continued, her voice laced with a hint of condescension. "Theo isn't one to be easily charmed or pleased by certain sense of style or... dresses. He has a very peculiar taste palate."Daphne's eyes narrowed imperceptibly, a flicker of annoyance crossing her features before she regained her composure. "Does he?""I'm only sharing this with you because you seem like a nice girl," Ava smiled, her words dripping with venomous sweetness. "But maybe Theo is upset because that is not a dress he would want his girlfriend to be seen in."Daphne took a slow, measured breath, maintaining a polite smile as she listened intently to Ava's pointed remarks."It's going to take more than just a red dress and some curves, my darling," Ava continued, her tone patronizing. "Maybe we should have lunch sometime. I can tell you all about Theo's likes and dislikes.""You know what, Ava?" Daphne chuckled lightly, a hint of steel beneath her amusement. "I'm okay. Thank you for your concern.""Are you sure?" Ava glanced at her friends, a subtle challenge in her gaze. "Daphne, I would hate for you and Theo to argue over something so lit-""When I want Theo's opinion on my appearance, I let his hands do the talking," Daphne interjected smoothly, her voice lowering to a confessional tone. "If Theo doesn't like something I'm wearing, he takes it off." Ava's demeanor shifted visibly, a mix of surprise and discomfort crossing her face as Daphne leaned in closer.""And you're right," Daphne murmured, her voice barely audible over the ambient noise. "He's not thrilled about this dress, which is exactly why he's so eager to have it off me tonight."As she pulled back, Daphne watched Ava's expression falter, her poised facade momentarily shaken."I'm sure the vulgarity is all fun and games for now," Ava retorted, her tone sharpening. "But trust me, sweetheart, it doesn't get you to the altar.""Least of my concerns at the moment," Daphne laughed lightly, her tone dismissive. "I'm more worried about Theo behaving himself tonight."Ava's face twisted with disdain, but before she could respond, Daphne turned on her heels and walked away, leaving Ava and her clique staring after her with mixed expressions of annoyance and disbelief. As Daphne walked away from Ava and her friends, her polite smile faded into a mask of controlled anger. Each step echoed her frustration, fueling the fire within her. The snide remarks and condescending tones replayed in her mind like a broken record, each word stabbing deeper with every mental repetition. In that moment, Dpahne's mind was made up. She had a role to play, and she was going to play it to perfection."The car is coming around," Theo looked up as Daphne walked up to him by the exit. Before he could say anything else, she threw her arms around his neck and pulled herself closer. "Hold me," she locked eyes with him. "One hand on my hip and the other one on my back." Confused, Theo's gaze flickered up to where Ava and her friends stood. "Don't look at her," Daphne playfully grabbed his face. "Look at me." Theo lowered his gaze to Daphne. "Does this mean you're in?""We'll discuss it tomorrow over the revision," Daphne replied, taking his hand and leading him toward the coat closet around the corner. With a mischievous smirk, she glanced up to where Ava stood, glaring at them in disbelief. Locking eyes with Ava, Daphne maintained her confident stride as she pulled Theo into the closet and shut the door behind them."If we're going to do this," Daphne said, pulling Theo closer, "we're going to do it my way. Now, take off your bowtie.""What changed your mind?" Theo's fingers deftly worked at the black bowtie, tossing it carelessly to the floor."She reminded me of someone," Daphne replied, flipping her hair over her shoulder and running her fingers through it, tousling the strands."Who?" Theo asked, his curiosity piqued."None of your business," Daphne teased, stepping closer to Theo and running a hand through his hair."Are you sure this is going to work?" Theo murmured, just as they heard footsteps approaching the closet."Ava? Ava, wait!" someone called from outside.Daphne raised an eyebrow and smiled at Theo. "Showtime."Theo leaned in, smudging the edge of Daphne's lipstick with his thumb before gripping her waist and pressing her against the coat rack. Daphne gasped softly, her hands threading through Theo's hair. She began to undo the buttons of his shirt as his hands found the slit of her dress, pushing it aside."In five," Theo whispered against her ear."Four," Daphne breathed back."Three," Theo chuckled softly."Two," Daphne joined in playfully."One," they murmured together just as the closet doors swung open.Ava gasped audibly, her eyes widening in shock as she took in the scene before her. Daphne glanced up, instantly hiding her face in Theo's chest as if she were embarrassed at being caught in such a compromising position.Theo glanced over his shoulder at Ava, a smirk playing on his lips. Ava's eyes blazed with fury as John grabbed her elbow and tugged her away."Babe, let's go," John said firmly, trying to defuse the situation. When Ava hesitated, Theo reached out and casually grabbed the doorknob. "Do you mind?" he said, his voice dripping with amusement as he closed the door on her face. Daphne stifled a laugh, feeling a surge of satisfaction at seeing the look on Ava's face.
